Are There Any Benefits of Egg White for Skin?
One of the very first things that come up when you look for DIY skincare are egg face masks. Nope, not the crispy white/ orange-yellow version from Sunday’s favorite breakfast table. Raw!!!
Raw eggs in skin care. Sounds crazy already? Lets have a closer look at benefits of egg white for skin.
Sometimes these masks only require you to use the whites, the yolks, or a combination of the two, and they’re often mixed with other ingredients you can find in your pantry. Nee? Yes! You can go with toppings such as sugar, ground coffee, oatmeal, and more.
But Raw Egg Face Masks Are SO Beneficial!
Yes, raw egg face masks do promise to have a million benefits. Well, not a million, but pretty close! They’re allegedly good for acne, dark spots, scarring, signs of aging, they will plump up the skin temporarily, boost hydration, destroy bacteria, and they can even help tighten your skin. So they say.
However, there’s very little evidence that supports the use of raw egg face masks to improve skin health. Sure, raw eggs can sometimes be used for anti-aging or firming creams, but these products contain proper preservatives. Otherwise, putting raw eggs right on your skin is not a very good idea. If you think about it, it’s downright scary!
Why Raw Egg Face Masks Are Not Exactly a Great Idea
You already know why it’s not a good idea to eat raw eggs, right? Because of food-borne pathogens such as salmonella, avian influenza, listeria, and staphylococcus aureus, which I’m certain you want to avoid. Putting raw eggs on your skin will still expose you to these infections.
The skin is the largest organ of our bodies and it’s extremely porous, so you can be sure it will absorb anything you put on it. The skin absorbs anywhere from 64 to 66 percent of what you topically apply to it. So, just because you’re not chugging down raw eggs like a maniac doesn’t mean you can’t potentially get sick from putting them on your skin. Especially if you do it often.
Additionally, by applying raw egg face masks you’re exposing yourself to the potential risk of an allergic reaction, which can cause redness, swelling, itching and other symptoms. Yikes!
So, Should You Use Raw Eggs In Skin Care – on Your Face?
I would say the benefits of a raw egg face mask are nothing you can’t enjoy from a high-quality, cruelty-free skincare product. Especially when these benefits have not been 100% confirmed.
Raw egg face masks are just not worth the risks of potential allergic reactions, infections, or skin irritation. Of course, there’s a safer way to get a raw egg face mask, which is using organic, pasteurized eggs. At the end of the day, it’s your choice.
